Brand Voice Studies — REVOLVE
Product copy written to fourteen house voices carried on REVOLVE — from Lioness at $79 to Prabal Gurung — as an exercise in register-shifting across one retailer.

More from this body of work

Product copy for REVOLVE has to shift register for the hundreds of brands it carries without leaving the retailer. The same job — a hook, then two short paragraphs — is written to its brands’ voices, from Varley and L*Space to Magda Butrym and Prabal Gurung. The diction, rhythm, and how much each brand will let you claim change, but what stays fixed is the format. The goal is that the customer should know who is talking before they read the name.

Dickey Jacket
One jacket, two lives.
The blazer is the blazer: clean shoulder, single button, cut close through the waist. The dickey zips in and out, so it goes from a board meeting to the side of a soccer field without you thinking about it once.

Brand imagery: Vince 02Vince
Silk Slip Dress
Nothing to it.
Silk charmeuse, cut straight, held up by two straps you adjust once and then forget. No waist seam, no shaping. It’s meant to hang.
Alone in August. Under a heavy knit the rest of the year.

Brand imagery: Wolford 03Wolford
Individual 10
Ten denier. Stronger than it sounds.
Knitted in one piece, so there’s no side seam to twist through the day. The toe is reinforced where it needs to be and invisible where it doesn’t.
Thin enough to read as bare skin. Tough enough to survive being pulled on in a hurry.

Brand imagery: LoveShackFancy 04LoveShackFancy
Tiered Cotton Maxi
Made for the last warm weekend.
Tiered cotton in a print found on a scrap of forties wallpaper. Ribbon at the shoulder, a ruffle at every seam, and enough skirt in it to spin.
It photographs the way you’re hoping. It creases the way real cotton does.

Brand imagery: Magda Butrym 05Magda Butrym
Silk Rose Top
One rose. That’s the design.
Silk crepe, cut close, with a single hand-formed rose at the shoulder. Everything else is plain on purpose, so the rose has somewhere to sit.
They’re made one at a time. No two sit the same way.

Hand-Knit Cardigan
Somebody’s grandmother would approve.
Hand-knit in Peru by a co-op we’ve worked with for four years, in a stripe we picked because it looked wrong in the best way.
Chunky enough to be the whole outfit. Wooden buttons. Slightly uneven, because a person made it.

Brand imagery: Poster Girl 07Poster Girl
Cutout Mini
Not a dress you sit down in.
Crystal mesh over a bonded stretch base, cut away at the ribs and the lower back. There’s real structure under the sparkle, which is more than most of what it’s up against.
Made for the four hours it’s meant for.

Brand imagery: Varley 08Varley
High-Rise Legging
The ones you stop adjusting.
A wide waistband that stays where you put it, and a compression knit that holds without gripping. Squat-tested opaque.
Soft enough that you’ll keep them on for the two hours after, which is the real use case.

Brand imagery: Posse 09Posse
Oversized Linen Shirt
Bought for a holiday. Worn all year.
Heavy Belgian linen, cut wide, with a collar that stands up if you want it to. It softens with every wash and never loses the texture.
Over a swimsuit. Over a tank. Over not much.
It creases. That’s linen.

Brand imagery: Zimmermann 10Zimmermann
Underwire Swim
The one that survives the pool.
Italian jersey with enough weight to hold its shape, in a print painted by hand before it ever touched fabric. Underwire where it counts, ties at the neck you can set and leave.
Chlorine-resistant — the unglamorous part, and the reason it lasts.

Brand imagery: Prabal Gurung 11Prabal Gurung
Draped Gown
Draped on the body, not on a table.
One length of silk, worked directly on the form until the fold fell where it should, then cut. A single seam, and an interior corset doing the work you can’t see.
Eleven hours to make. About four seconds to read across a room.

Brand imagery: Polo Ralph Lauren 12Polo Ralph Lauren
Cable Cashmere Crew
The same cable since 1967.
Hand-framed cashmere in the cable we’ve knit for six decades, with a ribbed crew that keeps its shape and a body cut to go over a shirt.
It will outlast the trend that made you want it.

Brand imagery: Manokhi 13Manokhi
Leather Moto
Softens in a month. Yours in a year.
Lamb leather, narrow through the shoulder, short at the hip, with hardware aged rather than polished.
Stiff for the first few wears. That’s the leather being real.

Brand imagery: L*Space 14L*Space
Ribbed Bikini Bottom
Full enough. Not too full.
A mid-rise cut that covers what you want covered without going near board-short territory, in a ribbed fabric that stays opaque wet.
Reversible, so it’s two suits.
